Crack Slimbing Tape

Crack Climbing Seminar

Course Details

The Mountaineers are offering a one day crack climbing seminar.

It will be on Saturday 17 October, 2020

The location will be Frenchman’s Coulee aka Vantage—about two hours driving time west of Spokane on I-90 (there are printed guidebooks and online resources such as Mountain Project > https://www.mountainproject.com < if you wish to research the area).

Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

The seminar will start with gathering in the climbers’ main parking lot (next to the outhouse) just off the old Vantage road at 8:00 am. The seminar finishes that day later in the afternoon—likely around 4:00 pm.

People should bring at least one roll of athletic tape and/or "crack gloves.”Crack climbing can be  abrasive, so long pants, a long sleeved zip-T shirt, etc., are recommended. Students are expected to bring their own ropes and protection (cams, nuts, etc.), rock shoes, harness, and personal gear—none will be provided.

The student limit is six, though if an additional student is motivated, experienced, and self-sufficient; up to eight students may be allowed.

Prerequisites:  All students must have completed the SM Rock School and Sport Lead School and/or have several years of competent rock-climbing experience up to 5.8.

We will cover basic hand taping techniques, the basics of the common crack sizes (tips, thin fingers, off-hands, hand, fist, and off-width), efficient movement, and efficient protection ideas, etc. If inclement weather prevents the seminar from occurring that day, then the seminar will be rescheduled. If an alternate day is chosen due to the weather, then the instructor or assistant will contact you with that information.

Instructor: Bob Loomis, (M) 509.710.5102, > bploomis@comcast.net <. Assistant: Brett Barna, (M) 208.773.5474, > brettjbarna@gmail.com <

Prospective students should contact the instructor or assistant if wishing to attend at least two weeks in advance, and have signed the SM trip/event liability waiver form (available on the SM website), ready to give to the instructor or assistant prior to or on the morning of the seminar, otherwise the student will not be able to participate as per club policy.

The seminar is free. In lieu of a student fee the instructor and assistant ask students to consider a donation to the club’s conservation fund. Contributions will not be monitored and on the honor system.

Participants are encouraged to be respectful of each other in this pandemic time.  If one shows signs of COVID-19 and/or suspects one has been exposed to the virus, please do not attend. Current club policy is that club events occur with all participants following CDC guidelines to limit virus exposure, and you are asked to adhere to that policy.
