Backcountry Skiing 101

Classroom Session: Thursday February 26th, 6pm

Snow Day: Saturday February 28th, 2026, Mt. Spokane

Course Description:

Transitioning from good ole fashion ‘lift-riding’ to sidecountry or backcountry travel is becoming easier and easier, but are you ready to take the plunge? Backcountry 101 is geared toward those who just are starting on their journey from lift access to the backcountry.

The goals of the class are to answer ‘101’ level questions and to begin or continue the conversation of safe and fun winter travel. This includes sections on gear, terrain choices, efficient movement, picking partners, and human factors.

Hands-on experience is provided during the snow day at Mt Spokane. Many club members and past students will be around to share experience, have a good time, and gain new ski partners.

Core learning objectives:

Gear basics, what to bring with you

Travel planning, uphill travel techniques, uphill to downhill transition

Smart terrain choices / efficient skin tracks

Ski area recommendations

Avalanche Awareness mentioned with this class is not a substitute for certified avalanche training. Students will be encouraged to deepen their understanding before taking any risks in the back/sidecountry.

** This class is not a replacement for a basic, level 1, or higher avalanche class. This skill set is KEY to safe travel, continued learning, and being a GOOD ski partner **

Course Requirements:

Students should be experienced skiers or snowboarders comfortable skiing in ungroomed terrain. Physical fitness for one/two uphill travel laps to the Mt. Spokane summit. One uphill lap at Mt Spokane is roughly 1,500 ft. and takes anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours.

Touring setup is highly recommended, though not required. Rental options are listed below, each have very limited selections, and often only one boot per size so reserve early!
