***We're moving to phase 3 the week of this trip! That means we can go to Wilderness group size limits instead of Covid group size limits. Please contact Holly if you are interested in joining this crew. Please note all Covid safety protocols will be required regardless of vaccination status.*** This is the annual Mountaineers service project on the Wenaha River Trail within the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness and the kick-off to the 2021 backpack season! We will meet at the Troy TH on Thursday morning (time TBD once crew list is finalized) and hike in on the Wenaha River Trail. We'll address maintenance needs as we hike in, with the main goal of focusing on the section of trail once we enter the Wilderness at the 5 mile mark. We typically set up a basecamp at the Crooked Creek trail junction, roughly mile 6, and continue our work each day by working farther up the drainage. If water level allows, we may cross Crooked Creek to work on the Wenaha River Trail. Each participant will need to be comfortable being self-supported (no carpooling at this time, no sharing of gear, and no tool sharing), including everything needed for both backpacking and trailwork. Tools can be supplied by the crew leader (sanitized and passed out at the TH) or participants are encouraged to bring their own tools if they have them. Participants should have facemasks available for all group settings (trailhead safety talk, passing times, etc.). We intend to maintain minimum 6' distancing at all times, and the campsite is large enough to allow everyone to spread out. Typically trailwork tasks include brushing work, log-out (we'll do single-buck crosscut work due to Covid-19 and social distancing), tread work and drainage work. Please reach out to the crew leader if you have questions about the nature of this trip or your readiness to join in on the fun!
