Our NSP Avalanche Level 1 Course covers: terrain identification, snowpack dynamics, weather factors, rescue skills, group/human factors, and route planning. Each student must have their own beacon, shovel, probe, and inclinometer; and must bring to each class. There will be no uphill travel during our course, so skins/snowshoes are not required. Please bring adequate clothes and food for full days on the mountain during our weekend; extra warm clothes for snow pit time is strongly recommended. We will eat lunch at the Mountain House on Saturday (lunch can be purchased here), but we will have lunch in the field on Sunday. All students should be comfortable skiing/riding in intermediate terrain. Cost of lift tickets are included in course fees; course fee made payable to instructor on first day of class.
Please email Gabe White at email@example.com with any further questions, or if registering for a course as a non-patroller.
Course costs: Patrollers ($65), non-patrollers ($150)
Registering for a National Ski Patrol course as a non-member:
1. Non-members (non-patrollers) first need to create an NSP; it's free. Go to NSP.org and click the Create Account button at the top right of the page. This requires an email address, which becomes the user name. The individual determines his or her own password. It may take 24-36 hours for the new account to activate.
2. Return to NSP.org and click Sign In at the top right of the page. Once logged in, click on Get Involved, then Course Schedule. You can search for courses by individual course number; there are 3 courses for each Avalanche Level 1, or you can search course numbers start gin with 'p039', that will bring up a list of courses available to non-patrollers by Silver Mountain Ski Patrol.
3. Our Avalanche Level 1 has 3 portions to sign up for:
1) Module 1- Classroom
2) Module 2- Field
3) Module 3- Organized Avalanche Rescue
Click on each Module for the course and register yourself for each and then proceed to checkout following prompts. There is no fee for this sign up process; cost of Course will be made payable in person to your instructor on first day of class. Make sure to check for the correct Course Number on each module as we put on multiple courses in a season with specific dates. You should receive an email confirmation from NSP within 24 hours verifying your enrollment.
