The ribbon of trail 
Winds through the river gorge 
A deep chasm in the earth 
Hidden away 
Rugged craggy ridges 
Where mountain sheep play 
Castles of rock 
Stone pillars 
Ancient rock towers 
Remnants of another time 
A distant past 
Echoes of yesterday 
It is the journey 
I have longed for 
Following the rushing river 
Winding through the narrow canyon 
Stepping over blackberry vines 
Heavy with last years shriveled berries 
Dried branches and pale grass 
Suddenly two buttercups dance 
Beside the trail 
Laughing off winters drudgery 
I laugh too 
Wildflowers! 
Spring has arrived!
