Schools and Clinics: Backpack School 2015
Come join us for 2015 backpack school! If you have never backpacked before or if you need to refresh your skills, this is the class for you! This course will include the following topics: Clothing and boots, map and compass skills, trip planning, major equipment, first-aid, meal preparation, and leave-no-trace practices. By the time the class ends, you will have the knowledge and skills to plan and execute your backpacking adventures safely and thoughtfully.
Lead instructors and all assistant instructors have gone through the course previously and have years of experience on the trail. They love the outdoors and look forward to sharing their knowledge with others eager to learn.
We encourage you to begin your exercise program before the actual class begins. The best exercise for backpacking is anything aerobic, such as walking, hiking, biking, rollerblading, stair stepping, spinning, snowshoeing, or any type of skiing (especially XC or skate skiing). Start out slow and build up to those levels. Your body and mind will be grateful.
The class finale will be the Graduation Backpack on Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday). In order to participate, students are required to attend six of the seven class sessions, which must include the First Aid and the Map and Compass Course. To receive your Graduation Certificate you must complete all the required classes and the Graduation Backpack (or an alternate backpack of at least two overnights approved by the directors).
Schedule information: We will meet for seven class sessions beginning
in late March and ending with the graduation
backpack over Memorial Day weekend.
Registration information: $40.00 class fee must be paid at the time of
registration and you must have
your 2015 Spokane Mountaineers dues paid on or
before class begins. Maximum participants accepted
will be 35 people. Early registration is recommended.
